Helix Monster Play

Ever wanted to be the monster for once? This mod for Helix: Feed The World lets you play the monster, and Helix has to deal with you for a change.

Download the modv1.12.0 · just unzip it into your game folder

Or use Helix Mod Manager: start the game, switch mods on and off, and install or update them by dropping the zip on it.

Two ways to play. Click one to check it out:

Hunt down an AI that fights back

Pick a stage and you're the monster. All its attacks, grabs and special moves are yours. Hit Tab to see the whole list.

Helix gets played by an AI, and I put a lot of time into making it feel like there's actually someone on the other side instead of a punching bag:

  • It circles you, fakes you out, dodges your swings and punishes you when you whiff.
  • It watches where and when your attacks hit and learns to get out of their way, so spamming the same move stops working after a while.
  • It tries different ways to get at you (rushing in, circling to your back, baiting a swing, taking a run-up) and sticks with what works.
  • Its mood changes with the fight: scared, furious, cocky, exhausted, fond and more, shown on the HUD. Let it pet you and then bite it, it won't forget that, not even next fight.
  • Inside you it paces itself: if tired struggling gets it nowhere, it waits for a full stamina bar and goes all out.
  • F7 changes its personality: Brave, Friendly, Timid, Submissive or Mixed.

Play against a friend

One of you plays Helix, the other plays the monster, each on your own PC with your own camera. You meet up in a lobby, chat a bit, pick a stage and the host starts the fight. Chat works during the fight too.

You both need the same version of the mod. Hit Play online in the main menu and go from there.

Getting into a game

1. Steam or join code, your pick.

2. Host and pick who you wanna play, or join your friend.

3. Chat, pick a stage, and hit Start once your friend is ready.

Steam

Easiest way. The host invites you from the lobby and the invite pops up in your game, or you find them under Steam > Join. You both need Steam open.

Steam will say you're playing "Spacewar" while the game is open. That's normal, the mod borrows Valve's free test app for Steam online play.

Join code

No Steam? No problem. The host's router opens the port by itself and the lobby gives you a short code like K7F2Q-9QXA3-M to send over.

Some routers don't play along. The lobby tells you if that happens, and Steam still works.

In the fight

Everything else is just the normal controls for whoever you're playing. When the host goes back to the menu, you both end up back in the lobby for another round.

Install

  1. Grab the mod and run the game once. It already comes with BepInEx, so you don't need anything else.
  2. Unzip it into your game folder (the one with HelixFTW.exe).
  3. Start the game, click past the 18+ notice and the title screen, and you'll see two new buttons in the main menu.

Mode switches between playing the monster, just watching, or normal Helix (F6 does the same). Play online opens the online menu.

Want it gone? Just delete BepInEx\plugins\HelixMonsterPlay.

Heads up, this is very WIP

There will be bugs, especially online. Some moves only work in the situation they were made for, and the AI still does weird stuff sometimes.

If something breaks, send me BepInEx\LogOutput.log from your game folder and tell me what you were doing when it happened.
